Product Description

For more than 100 years, the Opinel has been considered to be one of the highest quality budget pocket knives around. The simple construction, novel locking mechanism, and sharp thin blade have made them popular in corners of the globe far from their birthplace in Savoie, France. The high carbon steel blade takes on a beautiful patina, and will slice an apple better than all but the thinnest of paring knives.

It is typical for these knives to require a few light strokes on a stone to bring the edge up to par, but they sharpen up to a razor's edge very easily. If selecting the Special Grade option we will finish out the edge for you so it's ready to go out of the box.

In humid conditions the beech handle can slightly swell, causing the blade to be difficult to open. This can be prevented by allowing the wood to absorb a small amount of mineral oil. The blade may be loosened easily by holding the knife at the collar with the blade facing away from the hand and firmly tapping the end of the handle against a tabletop or other hard surface, a practice traditionally known in France as "le coup du savoyard."
